How hard is the Astronomy DSST / DANTES*?
Some of our students struggle with this exam because of the extensive vocabulary that needs to be memorized. Terms such as blackbody radiation, spectral classification, Kepler's laws, and Hubble's law are just a few that you'll need to learn. The good news is that the content holds together conceptually. However, once you grasp how stellar mass drives a star's life cycle, other concepts fall into place.
Plan for 4 to 5 weeks starting from scratch. Our 89% pass rate is lower than we would like, but it is higher than the 46% reported by the military.
How to study for the Astronomy DSST / DANTES*

Understanding how a star's mass determines its full life cycle, from the main sequence through white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole, is the highest-value content on this exam. TIP: Master the H-R diagram thoroughly. Know where main sequence stars, giants, supergiants, and white dwarfs fall on the diagram. Know how a star's position shifts during its lifetime. Know how luminosity and temperature relate to each other. H-R diagram questions appear throughout the stellar evolution section and are among the most consistently tested topics on the exam.
What score do you need to pass?
A scaled score of 400 is the standard passing threshold at most schools. Credit typically applies toward a natural science or general education requirement. Confirm with your institution before starting to study.
Pass and the credit appears as a pass with no score on your transcript. Failing the exam does not result in any notation on your transcript.

This exam makes the most sense if you have any science background or have spent time watching astronomy content. If your program requires a lab, take the class, as the DSST credit will not satisfy that requirement at most schools.
